On the 14th of August, the annual Radford Cup cricket match was held at Regatta Way Cricket Club. The two competing teams, one comprised of solicitors and the other of barristers, gathered to engage in a friendly yet competitive game in pursuit of the prestigious trophy.
Lauren Crow, the President of the Society, was present at the match, showing her support for both teams. She expressed gratitude for their unwavering support and also extended thanks to John Hooper for sponsoring the new cricket caps for the teams.
During the coin toss between team captains Aaron Singh (Solicitors) and Luc Chignell (Barristers), the barristers chose to bat first. Opening the batting were Jonathan Dee and Jonathan Cox, facing off against Joshua Ganley and Philip Cordery's bowling. The initial score stood at 10 runs per over with no wickets lost, until Jonathan Dee was dismissed. Samuel Lound then took his place at the crease. Starting strong with a boundary, Sam set the tone for the innings, but the Solicitors' exceptional fielding soon ended his innings with a catch. James Bide-Thomas was the next batsman in line.
Wesley Walton assumes the fresh bowling role, delivering superb balls and dismissing Jonathan Cox after he scored 54 runs from 5 overs and lost 3 wickets. Following Cox, Jack McCracken showcases exceptional batting skills before the end of the 6th over. Then, Shiv Nand takes over the bowling duties and successfully eliminates Bide-Thomas, leaving Michael Cranmer Brown to continue setting the barristers' scores.
Barrister's skipper, Luc Chignell, takes the field as Bide-Thomas retires, only to be dismissed without scoring a run, the famous 'golden duck', which takes the tally to 81 runs in 9 overs, with 6 wickets down.
Clarkson Baptiste makes his entrance at Regatta Way and in no time, he is dressed in his gear, bat in hand, ready to continue the batting for the Barristers. Alastair Rose is the one delivering the balls and the final numbers read 102 runs after 11 overs, with 8 wickets down.
It's time for the Solicitors to showcase their cricket abilities. James Sookias and Jak Ward are the opening pair for the Solicitors, facing the bowling of Raglan Ashton and Jack McCracken. James displays impressive batting skills, scoring multiple boundaries and reaching 18 runs without losing any wickets in just one over. After retiring at 35 runs, James is replaced by the team captain, Aaron Singh, who continues the strong performance. The team has reached a commendable total of 76 runs in 6 overs without losing a wicket, making the Barristers work hard in the field.
After accumulating an extra 35 runs, Singh stepped down, leaving the last batsman, Ben Burton, to end the match with a whopping 104 runs in just 9 overs and no loss of wickets. What an extraordinary score! Yet again, the trophy remains with the Solicitors!
Presenting the Trophy to the winning team was Society President, Lauren Crow. Lauren thanked everyone for their sportsmanship and the Regatta Way Cricket Club for their hospitality in hosting this annual game.
