Radford Cup Cricket Match - NLS Solicitors 'v' Barristers 2023

On Wednesday 16th August, the Society’s teams of Solicitors and Barristers met at Gedling & Sherwood Cricket Ground to compete for the Radford Cup.

The Solicitors’ team was captained by Aaron Singh from Blue Light Card and the Barristers’ team was captained by Luc Chignell from 1 High Pavement Chambers.

The Barristers’ won the toss and chose to bowl first, and so the match begins…

Beginning to bowl for the Barristers is Raglan Ashton, Luc Chignell, Samuel Lowne and Simon Eckersley. First out to bat for the Solicitors was Burhan Alan from Nelsons Solicitors and James Sookias from Gateley Legal. Both Burhan and James, certainly gave the Barristers some fantastic runs, smashing many 6’s and within te first 15 minutes, the Solicitors had racked up 36 runs on 2 overs!

Five minutes later, we were at 51 runs with 3 overs, they were smashing it!

This was the first appearance of James Sookias, who retired at 31 runs, John Hooper then goes out to bat and at 30 minutes into match time, the scores on the board are 91 for 7 overs.

Solicitor’s Captain, Aaron Singh head out to bat with more 6’s achieved finally retiring at 114 from 10 overs, with one of his final hits, bouncing into the Pavillion and nearly taking out the Society’s Head of Operations, a lucky deflection from Wesley Walton and quick ducking from Michelle Foster saw everyone safe!

New to the team, Joshua Ganley from Shakespeare Martineau and member of the Nottinghamshire Junior Lawyers Division, steps up to bat as Aaron retires at 31 runs. Bowling for the Barristers changes and Phil Gibbs and James Bide-Thomas begin to try and catch the Solicitor’s out.

Among the last to bat for the Solicitors was Jak Ward from Roythornes, unfortunately taking a wicket but leaving the Solicitors’ score at 160 at 20 overs. Not a bad first game!

It’s all change and the Barristers prepare to bat and the Solicitors to field. Among the solicitors fielding is Vikky Lai, who also takes on some great bowling too!

First out to bat for the Solicitors are Gregor Purcell and Tom Welshman.  Wesley Walton and James Sookias, step up to bowl quickly getting a wicket on Gregor.

Raglan Ashton and Thomas Welshman are batting now, and Tom achieves his first 4!

Raglan is replaced with Phil Gibbs and the combined batting between Tom and Phil take the scores to 30 runs with 2 wickets and 6 overs. The clouds begin to fill the sky, reducing the light but play continues, with Kassra Powles bowling for the Solicitors.

Phil Gibbs is sadly out on the 3rd wicket after achieving the longest boundary.  Alec Purcell is into bat with Tom, but not for long as Kassra finally bowls Tom out!

Samuel Lowne steps into play and as we progress through bowlers, we find the scores after a full hour of play with the Barrister’s score at 72 with 12 overs and 4 wickets. The Barristers are batting well and picking up pace with Samuel Lowne hitting a four and taking it to 100!

A vital catch dropped, suddenly found the barristers at 120 runs of 16 overs and 4 wickets. Alec Purcell is caught out after 15 runs and James Bide-Thomas is sent out to bat, with Joshua Ganley bowling paired with Martin Foulds. Excellent fielding by the Solicitors’ team seeks a great catch by Jak Ward.

The Barristers’ score now sits at 134 runs, off 18 overs and 5 wickets. Samuel Lowne retires at 30 runs and is replaced by Gareth Gimson.  With the last overs in sight, the scores on the door end with 140 on 19 overs…

It’s a clear win for the Solicitor’s team again this year!

Everyone returns to the Pavillion for the cup presentation and well-deserved drink and Domino Pizza!

Thank you to Pete at Gedling & Sherwood Cricket Club for allowing us to take up the Radford Cup challenge again this year, not to mention thanks to our two umpires, Ruki De Silva & Colin!
