President's Vision - December 2024

The past month has been a busy, but really exciting and rewarding one, filled with opportunities to connect, celebrate, and contribute to our wonderful legal community.

First up, I attended the newly qualified solicitors and new barrister evening. This key event in the NLS calendar was a celebration of the dedication and hard work that these individuals have demonstrated throughout their journeys. It was a privilege to meet the newly qualified members, hear their stories, and discuss their aspirations for the future. Events like these are not only about recognition but also about fostering a supportive environment where accomplishments are celebrated, and connections are made. It was inspirational to see the excitement and optimism in the room!

Next up, I was a judge for the President’s Cup, our highly regarded negotiation competition – think Apprentice boardroom but with fewer dramatic pauses and more professionalism. I got to see our finalists navigate the scenario with strategic thinking, clear communication, and poise under pressure.  As is the case for all the events I have attended celebrating our junior lawyers this year, I am positive and hopeful about our next generation of legal professionals in Nottingham. Congratulations to both Francesca Townsend and Will Schlich for making the final but particularly to Francesca who went on to be our very worthy winner!

Now to the other end of the scale, I had the privilege of attending the Past Presidents’ Lunch which is particularly poignant in the Society’s 150th year. This annual event brings together a distinguished group of former presidents of the Nottinghamshire Law Society (legends, if you will) and is a celebration of the Society’s rich history and the invaluable contributions of those who have led it over the years. The conversations during the lunch were full of tales of their experiences, insights, and the lessons they’ve learned throughout their careers.  A personal highlight was to see a visual reminder of how far we have come in terms of female representation in the President role. There might have only been 8 in the last 150 years but there have been 4 in the last 7 years and so I have no doubt that the table will look quite different when I am still attending in 30 years’ time!

It really has been a very memorable Autumn/Winter season being your President which has allowed me to get involved in all manner of things from recognising our incoming members and their achievements to celebrating the legacy of those who have paved the way. Each event has left me feeling grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such a supportive network of people.

And on that reflective note, I will also take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, however you like to celebrate it. May it be filled with joy, laughter, and maybe even some well-earned rest. I hope to see you all at events in 2025!
