An interview with Vice President Drew Dennis

As Nottinghamshire Law Society celebrates its 150th anniversary, we’re delighted to introduce the newly appointed Vice President, Drew Dennis. Known for his energy, commitment, and community spirit, Drew brings a fresh perspective to the role. Last year, he quite literally took fundraising to new heights—supporting the President’s charity efforts by completing a skydive. In this interview, Drew shares his motivations, priorities for the year ahead, and his vision for the Society as it continues to evolve and grow.

❖ What inspired you to take on the role of VP of NLS and what does this position mean to you personally?

I was “the Covid chair” of the Nottingham Junior Lawyers from 2020 to 2022, so joining the Nottinghamshire Law Society seemed the obvious next step for someone who loves a committee as much as I do! Given how much the local legal community has given to me, I wanted to give something back and I hope I can do that in my role as Vice President. I am honoured to become “Veep” and look forward to working with Marie and Aldijana this year for the benefit of our members.

❖ What are your key priorities or goals for the Society during your term as President?

Given my previous NJLD links, I hope to encourage our junior members to engage with the society so that they can benefit as much as I have from the opportunities available. The society is going from strength to strength, so I merely hope that we can continue to flourish and if I can help in any way, I will.

❖ How do you see the role of local law societies evolving in today's legal landscape, particularly in supporting members and promoting access to justice?

I think local law societies are crucial in making the views of our members heard. In a London-centric world, I think it is very important that we are able to give our members a voice and champion their interests. It is also imperative that members are able to congregate to enjoy themselves once in a while and society events certainly help with that objective!

❖ What advice would you give to junior lawyers or those considering getting involved with the Law Society?

Networking is crucial as a lawyer and NLS is a great way to start. Building relationships with your peers and colleagues can lead to job opportunities and career advancement as well as a wider understanding of your area. It also allows you to learn new things, meet new friends and connect with people who can provide both support and guidance. Plus, Firms love it – why wouldn’t you sign up?

❖ How do you plan to engage with members across different stages of their careers - from students and trainees to senior practitioners?

I would like to hope that I am (relatively) easy to talk to and give (relatively) decent advice. I started as a volunteer legal assistant and have made my way through “the ranks”, so I would hope that I have some decent experience to share with our junior members. Conversely, I’m equally happy to commiserate with our more senior practitioners in the bar!

❖ Are there any particular initiatives or events you're especially excited about during your term?

Our annual Awards dinner is always a highlight, as is the Christmas Drinks. At events, I’m normally found with a drink in my hand, so come and find me!

❖ Outside of your legal work, what are some of your interests or passions?

As a former professional opera singer, I keep my hand in with gigs from time to time. I’m also a self-confessed sports nut/exercise fanatic, so I’m usually in the gym or on the sports field. I have also been published as an author, so I’m quite busy away from the office!

❖ Can you share a memorable moment or achievement from your time as a member of Nottinghamshire Law Society?

It’s hard to look past our charity skydive earlier this year. It was a great day, with good company and stunning weather. The buzz wasn’t bad either! Can I go up again, please?
