On Thursday 14th March, we hosted the first networking lunch for 2024 in Nottingham. Over the year a series of networking lunches are held across Nottinghamshire, to enable all our members to attend and meet the current President. President Stephen Luke, welcomed the members that had stepped out to join us at the elegant Cosy Club, where a feast of hot buffet was to be served. Joining us were representatives from Barratts Solicitors, Freeths LLP, Geldards LLP, Hopkins Solicitors, Luke & Bridger Law, MJC Law, Nelsons Solicitors, New Square Chambers, NTU Law School, OTB Legal, Roythornes, RBC Brewin Dolphin, Review Solicitors and Sills & Betteridge.We would like to thank the Cosy Club for their hospitality, fantastic buffet and service. We will be back later in the year.

On Friday 8th March, nine fit and able participants gathered at the Park Squash Club to take on the sporting challenge of the Francis Reeson Squash Trophy. This year we had the opportunity to welcome former District Judge, Francis Reeson to watch over the tournament and umpire the semi-final rounds. Past President, Philip Turton was also on hand to give his expertise in organising the leagues and acting referee to matches.

Friday 8th March, marks International Women's Day, a special occasion to honour the women who hold positions on the Society's Council and lead as chairs of sub-committees, as well as those who have served as past and will serve as future Presidents. Let us continue to empower and support women in leadership positions, creating a more equitable and representative environment for all individuals to thrive. Together, we can work towards a future where gender equality is not just a goal but a reality, where women are truly valued and respected for their talents and contributions to society.

On the evening of Wednesday 7th February, we all gathered at Code 34 for a wine tasting event. This was a new addition to our social calendar and it was a huge hit, with tickets selling out quickly! We were lucky to have Weavers of Nottingham providing us with a fantastic selection of wines. If you enjoyed any of them, you can purchase them directly from Weavers - just visit their website. The event was generously sponsored by RBC Brewin Dolphin, and we were delighted to have Alan Rodgers and Byron Burghart in attendance. The atmosphere at Code 34 was perfect for the occasion, and we had a lovely spread of cured meats and cheeses to complement the wines we were tasting.

This prestigious advocacy competition is the only one of its kind in the UK and has long been established in Nottinghamshire Law Society's history, with the competition being held every year for the last 55 plus years. The competition is in two rounds, the first round will take place on Thursday 14 March 2024 at the Nottingham Law School, with the final being held on Thursday 18th April 2024. The competition is open to law students (including LPC, SQE and Bar Training course), trainee solicitors, solicitor apprenticeships,pupil barristers (first seat only), paralegals (up to 2 year's experience). The Hammond Cup provides competitors an opportunity to practice their advocacy skills in a realistic court room setting, with feedback experienced practitioners and professional Judges.

On the 13th of December, we gathered at Copper to celebrate the joyous occasion of Christmas with our valued members. President, Stephen Luke, extended a warm welcome to all attendees and raised a glass in toast to the festivities. The evening was made even more delightful with the musical performances by Matt Turner, while Copper's exceptional hospitality added to the overall experience. Photographer Jay Glenn, skillfully captured the heartfelt greetings, laughter, festive smiles, and magical atmosphere of the night. The President's Cup negotiation competition came to a close at KCH Garden Square on Monday 4th December, in the final round. Finalists Lane Castro from Gateley Legal and Will Jones from Freeths LLP. This esteemed competition is one of three legal competitions organised by the Society for young legal professionals.

The annual luncheon gathering of the Society's former presidents takes place on the initial Friday of December at the revered Trent Bridge Cricket Club. This year, a total of twenty previous presidents came together to reminisce about the past years and receive updates on the Society from the Immediate Past President, Janine McKinney.

The Society holds networking lunches throughout the county each year. This year, the trendy location Andwhynot in Mansfield was chosen as the perfect venue for the Mansfield Networking lunch. The annual gathering included representation from the Society's patron, MARSH, Nam Qureshi, and Natasha Miotk. Review Solicitors, Joe Molloy, and Jack Steele also provided their support for the event. The guest list was further enhanced by the attendance of delegates from our member firms and chambers, which include Fidler & Pepper, Bryan & Armstrong, Shacklocks LLP, Banner Jones, Nelsons Solicitors, Ropewalk Chambers, Richard Nelson LLP, Shoosmiths LLP, and ABEC Legal.

On November 23rd, we gathered at the renowned Indian restaurant, MemSaab, to commemorate the legal accomplishments of the newly qualified solicitors and recent tenant barristers of Nottinghamshire. On the evening of November 9th, we came together at MemSaab, Nottingham to commemorate Diwali. The stunning illumination, incredible Indian cuisine, and delightful company made the night truly exceptional. Connecting with new acquaintances and catching up with familiar faces created the perfect atmosphere for a successful evening of professional networking. The sun was shining on Attenborough Cricket Club, when the two teams from astride the A52 met to compete for the coveted cricket shield. Thursday 24th August, was the day set for the Battle of the A52 between Nottinghamshire Law Society against Derby & District Law Society.

On Wednesday 16th August, the Society’s teams of Solicitors and Barristers met at Gedling & Sherwood Cricket Ground to compete for the Radford Cup. The Solicitors’ team was captained by Aaron Singh from Blue Light Card and the Barristers’ team was captained by Luc Chignell from 1 High Pavement Chambers.

On Tuesday 9th May 2023, Nottinghamshire Law Society hosted the Annual General Meeting in the Old Chemistry Theatre, Newton & Arkwright Building, Nottingham Trent University, welcoming members, Council members and guests for presentations of prizes and charity donations. The AGM was chaired by President, Janine McKinney, the 7th female president since 1875.

On Thursday 20th April, the annual Hammond Cup advocacy competition, was set to begin at Nottingham Law School. President Janine McKinney welcomed all those involved beginning with the distinguished judges, HHJ Coe QC, HHJ Coupland and JP Simon Massarella OBE. The Hammond family were also in attendance.
