On Tuesday 18th March last year, I left the offices on Friar Lane for what I thought would be a temporary period, whilst we gathered ourselves against the new invader, Covid-19.

The last training course to be held at the Hub was with the first cohort of the PSC Core session, Client Core and Professional Standards.  Almost exactly a year to the day, I welcomed the 2020-2021 cohort to the same training session, this time virtually.

The Zoom introductions and an update on what everyone had been doing for the last 6 months, were followed by the next stage of training.  It was great to see their smiling faces and even though we were all miles apart, we could still feel the positive vibes that once filled the Society’s training room.

On this day last year, we also had to make the difficult decision to postpone the Annual Awards Dinner.  We did, however, still manage to celebrate those award winners virtually – a format since copied by the Golden Globes, I notice!  While we still can’t hold our Annual Dinner, we can announce today that the Annual Awards 2021 is now open for nominations and, this year for 1 year only, we have introduced an extra award ‘Lockdown Hero’ of the year.

To find out more about the nomination categories – visit:  Annual Awards 2021

Don’t forget to read the ‘Interview with Solicitor of the Year Winner – Conor Maguire’.  The interview gives you an insight on how he felt winning the award, his journey to law and his future aspirations.

So, what else are we planning?

This year’s Society calendar comes to an end at our AGM on Tuesday 27th April, where we will see another moment in history being made, as our current President Philip Turton, embarks on another year at the helm, with the hope that this next year will allow us to return to an active social calendar with face-to-face events!

We are in the final planning stages of the evening with Gary Bell QC, please watch out for the mailing and press ‘YES’ to joining us for cheese, wine and chat with the renowned Barrister.

Coming back to current events, I am looking forward to an evening of TASKMASTER and cocktails with the members of our Society.   Tonight, the virtual cocktail bar and mixologist will delight us with top tips on how to make the perfect martini.

Best wishes,

Michelle Taylor
