Edition: March 2020

Welcome to my latest bulletin as Chair of the NJLD for 2020. Behind the scenes, our Committee are  extremely busy organising events and activities for junior lawyers across the region. Further details will be released shortly, so please keep an eye on your emails and social media!

NQ Careers Event with Bygott Biggs

On 20th February 2020, the NJLD hosted its second event of the year, which was a careers talk hosted by Richard Betts and David Mayfield of Bygott Biggs. The event took place at Baresca in the heart of the city.

Sumandeep Nahl of Hopkins Solicitors and Jessica Silvers from Family Law Group did an excellent job in co-ordinating the event and I hope that those 28 members who attended will agree that the event was both informative and enjoyable. Thank you to both David and Richard for giving up their time and providing their expertise to the NJLD once again.

Hammond Cup

Can I take this opportunity to advertise the Hammond Cup, which is due to take place shortly at Nottingham Law School (“NLS”). The Hammond Cup is a great opportunity for junior lawyers to boost their confidence and put into practice the skills they’ve learnt whilst studying and working in law. Why not challenge yourself and enter the competition, which is now in its 52nd year. This advocacy competition is hosted by the NJLD in partnership with the NLS and is sure to get the braincells working!

Deadline for entry: 11th March 2020
First Round: Thursday 19th March 2020
Final: Thursday 23rd April 2020

This competition is open to paralegals, trainee solicitors and pupil barristers and gives competitors an opportunity to practice their advocacy skills in a realistic Courtroom setting. It also gives entrants exposure within the local legal profession whilst receiving invaluable feedback from experienced practitioners and professional judges.

In round one, candidates will have the choice of presenting a ten minute criminal plea in mitigation or a civil interim application before a panel of esteemed judges, who will be looking for candidates to show clarity of expression, thoroughness and, of course, persuasiveness.

The top four candidates from round one will then be invited to participate in the final, which is scheduled for Thursday 23 April 2020. The following fantastic prizes are available:

1st Prize £250 & an engraved trophy
2nd Prize £150
3rd Prize £100
4th Prize £50

If the prospect of law and friendly competition sounds up your street, please email your completed entry form to Sarah Murray via Smurray@fraserbrown.com by Wednesday 11 March 2020 at 5pm.

We are always looking for new members to boost the NJLD throughout the region. Sign up now so that you don't miss out on everything the NJLD has to offer during 2020.

As ever, we would politely encourage local firms to contribute towards their staff members' costs, as the NJLD is an excellent networking opportunity and allows members to build relationships which we hope will thrive, both now and in the future.

Should you be interested in joining the NJLD or have any questions in respect of membership, please do not hesitate to contact our membership secretary, Jessica Jesson, via JessicaJesson@eversheds-sutherland.com.  Alternatively, please contact myself on Andrew.Dennis@gateleylegal.com.

If your firm, chamber or company has placement students, Paralegals, Pupil Barristers, Trainees or newly qualified Solicitors / recently called Barristers (up to 5 years PQE/BPTC) then consider the benefits that the NJLD's educational, professional, social and sporting networks can offer them.  For further information please see the NJLD Webpage https://www.nottslawsoc.org/about-njld

    Coming Soon…

Please keep your eyes peeled for the next NJLD event, which is a Cheese and Wine event and will be sponsored by Bygott Biggs.

This event is scheduled for 26th March 2020 and will take place at The Cheese Shop on Flying Horse Walk. Further details will revealed in due course, so please stay tuned!

    All the best,

    Andrew Dennis
